We decided early in our history to cast a wide net in terms of whom we'd invite to our dinners and special events; we are deliberately a "big tent." Regular participants--all of whom are asked to pay the same, one-time new member initiation fee--include not only mental health consumers, their family members and friends, but doctors, social workers, non-profit executives, artists, musicians, and a sprinkling of lawyers and politicians. All are welcome!
There are only three ground rules:
--No one who habitually uses hard street drugs will be asked back.
--No one who is a practicing alcoholic will be asked back, although we do have some recovered alcoholics.
--Consumers are asked to rely on their doctors' treatment plan for them, which is based on the honor system.
Thus far, we have been able to avoid implementing an annual dues structure, thanks to the generous donation of both time and money from our many sponsors. The one-time, same-for-everybody new member initiation fee of $40.00 may be paid in installments, depending on financial circumstances. All that we ask in return for your unlimited participation in our events is that you behave appropriately, dress appropriately, be respectful of others, and basically follow the Golden Rule--treat all Beatniks whom you encounter with the same respect and friendship which you would like to be treated. Anyone who does "make a scene" and behaves inappropriately at any of our events will be be asked to leave. And don't forget- -please always leave a small tip for Alfio's friendly waiter staff! For any questions regarding your new membership in the Beatniks, call Peter R. "Beatnik Pete" Warner, club manager, at his home office at (301) 279-2578 or on his cell phone at (240) 449-5988. Prospective members may attend one dinner or event "for free" before being asked to pay the one-time new member initiation fee.
